FRUITLAND -- Clifton Harold Bess, 75, of Fruitland, died Saturday, May 4, 1996, at Heartland Care and Rehab Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Sept. 22, 1920, in Essex, son of Charley and Mary Emrick Bess.

He was married to Bernice Ausman Sept. 12, 1953. She survives.

He was a sergeant with the Cape Girardeau Police Department from 1955 to 1959. He was self-employed as painting contractor in the Cape Girardeau area until 1969 when he and his wife moved to Fruitland, where they operated Bess Antiques.

Survivors include a son, Wesley W. Kinder of Fruitland; a brother, Dennis H. Bess of Chaffee; three sisters, Jeweldine Lindy and Mary L. Holland, both of St. Louis, and Madline Hente of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson with the Rev. Charles J. Lance officiating.
