PERRYVILLE -- Cletus J. Schumer, 74, of Perryville died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Perry County Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 25, 1923, at Glennonville, son of Edward F. and Clara Schlattman Schumer. He and Ruby A. Scheppers were married Sept. 28, 1946. She died May 4, 1998...

PERRYVILLE -- Cletus J. Schumer, 74, of Perryville died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Perry County Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 25, 1923, at Glennonville, son of Edward F. and Clara Schlattman Schumer. He and Ruby A. Scheppers were married Sept. 28, 1946. She died May 4, 1998.

Schumer was a commercial construction contractor and raised livestock. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church at Highland, American Legion Post 133, AmVets Post 94, River Hills Eagles Aerie 4034, and Elks Lodge 2701.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include five sons, Michael, Thomas, Ralph, Ronald and Barney Schumer, all of Perryville; five daughters, Kathie Wheeler, Rose Biri, Ruth Geile, Bonnie Clements and Eileen Mueller, all of Perryville.

Also surviving are three brothers, Elbert Schumer of Cuba, Mo., Leroy Schumer of Perryville, Charles Schumer of Washington, Mo.; three sisters, Dorothy Farishon of St. Louis, Loretta Finn and Lucille Sego of Cuba; 34 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter and a sister.

Friends may call at Young and Sons Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. today, and Friday from 6:30-9:30 a.m. The parish wake will be at 7 tonight, and the rosary will be recited at 9:15 a.m. Friday.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, with the Rev. Robert Brockland officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
