Cleo Elven Johns, 87, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born Oct. 13, 1916, at Advance, Mo., son of Charles Edward and Florence Lee Opal White Johns. He and Fern Sample were married March 10, 1937. She preceded him in death on June 9, 1995. He and Irene Brasher were married June 8, 2000. She preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 2003...

Cleo Elven Johns, 87, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Oct. 13, 1916, at Advance, Mo., son of Charles Edward and Florence Lee Opal White Johns. He and Fern Sample were married March 10, 1937. She preceded him in death on June 9, 1995. He and Irene Brasher were married June 8, 2000. She preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 2003.

Johns owned and operated Johns Metal and Salvage from 1939 to his retirement in 1997. He took over for his father Ed and moved the shop from South Frederick Street to South Kingshighway in 1951. He was a Cape Girardeau City fire commissioner from 1948 to 1952, a third-degree Mason and former member of the Cape Girardeau Masonic Temple, a member of the Cape Girardeau Elks Club and a licensed pilot and member of the Cape Girardeau Pilots Association.

Survivors include a son, Cleo Edward Johns of Jackson; a brother, Olin Johns of Cape Girardeau; twin grandsons, Cleo E. Johns Jr., and wife Joyce and Curt A. Johns and wife Penny of Jackson; and three great-grandchildren, Cory, Molly and Jordan Johns of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Chloe Ann Johns.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Chapel in Jackson.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the chapel. Darren Henderson will officiate, with burial at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
