CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Clara M. Smith (nee Stone), 71, of Chaffee died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She was born Oct. 24, 1928, in Oran, Mo., daughter of the late James Edward and Sarah Frances Crider Stone. She married John Edw. Smith Dec. 2, 1950, in Oran...

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Clara M. Smith (nee Stone), 71, of Chaffee died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

She was born Oct. 24, 1928, in Oran, Mo., daughter of the late James Edward and Sarah Frances Crider Stone. She married John Edw. Smith Dec. 2, 1950, in Oran.

During her 42-year career as an X-ray technician, Clara worked at St. Francis Hospital and Internal Medicine Group. She had been active in the American Society of X-Ray Technicians, Business and Professional Women Association, and was a member of Daughters of St. Ambrose.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sarah Ann de Haas and husband Bastiaan of Houston, Texas; a sister, Mary Frances Storey of Wakefield, R.I.; a brother, T. Walter Stone of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; two grandchildren, Rhonda Abernathy of Savannah, Ga., Josh Elfrink of Scott City, Mo.; three great-granddaughters, Kelsey Lynn Elfrink, Natalie Ann and Ashley Mae Abernathy; numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Ward Stone, Frank Stone, Joe Stone, Jimmy Stone, Billy Stone, and a sister, Wilma Stone Shanklin.

A memorial mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at 10 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. The Rev. Ralph J. Duffner will officiate. Burial will be in St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery.

Kriegshauser South Mortuary in St. Louis is in charge of arrangements.
