Clara Mae Jacobsin Shanks, 84, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at The Lutheran Home. She was born Nov. 18, 1914, in Illmo, daughter of Harry Alexander and Mary Blakemore Shelley Dickey. She and John Samuel Jacobsin were married Aug. 14, 1961, at Illmo. He died in November 1974. She then married Loren Adair Shanks on Sept. 7, 1985. He died in July 1998...

Clara Mae Jacobsin Shanks, 84, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at The Lutheran Home. She was born Nov. 18, 1914, in Illmo, daughter of Harry Alexander and Mary Blakemore Shelley Dickey. She and John Samuel Jacobsin were married Aug. 14, 1961, at Illmo. He died in November 1974. She then married Loren Adair Shanks on Sept. 7, 1985. He died in July 1998.

She received her bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University and taught school for 45 years, 32 of those in Cape Girardeau and surrounding areas.

She moved to New Haven in 1967 and taught there for 13 years before retiring in 1980.

She served as minister of Emory United Methodist Church and Senate Grove Methodist Church in New Haven from 1974 to 1985. She returned to Cape Girardeau in 1985 after retiring from the ministry.

She was a member of Centenary Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include her brother, Rev. Bill Dickey of Scott City; two stepdaughters, Katheryn Phelen of OFallon and Peggy Grasser of St. Peters; six step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren; and 3 grand nieces. She was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Dickey.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the chapel, with the Revs. Clayton Smith, Ann Mowery and James Sanderson officiating. Burial will be Cape Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Clayton Smith, Rev. Ann Mowery and Rev. James Sanderson officiating.
