ANNA, Ill. -- Chester L. Spears, 77, of Anna died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
He was born May 11, 1921, in Union County, son of Martin and Sarah Wrinkles Spears. He and Betty E. Boyd were married May 29, 1954, in Chicago.
Spears was a life member of Anna VFW Post 3455 and DAV in Murphysboro. He was a member of Cobden American Legion Post 259, past 15th District commander, former assistant chairman of state and district "Voice of America" program 27 years.
He was parade chairman several years of the Anna Veterans Day Parade and Cobden Peach Festival Parade.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Martin Spears of Anna; two daughters, Debbie Holden of Jonesboro, Donna Shannon of Cobden; two sisters, Opal Hacker and Lillian Zumoff of Florida; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, a brother, and two sisters.
Friends may call at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna from 6-8 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. John Cripps officiating. Burial will be in Anna Cemetery, with graveside rites by Anna VFW Post.
