Charles "Chuck" Thurman Sr., 78, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2015, at his home in Jackson, surrounded by his family.

He was born Aug. 31, 1936, in Ridgley, Tennessee, to Edgar William and Lelia Zora Payton Thurman. He and Doris Ann Graham were married July 3, 1960, in Summersville, West Virginia.

Chuck went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1956. In November 1959, he entered the U.S. Army, serving honorably until February 1962. He then returned to the phone company, worked 30 more years and retired in 1992. After retirement, he enjoyed his family, life on the farm and his woodworking shop. He was a member of Connection Point Church in Jackson.

Loving survivors include his wife of 54 years, Doris, of Jackson; three children, Belinda (Rex) Jones of Jackson, Charles (Debbie) Thurman Jr. of Marble Hill, Missouri, and Melissa (David) Bierer of Marble Hill; a sister, Doris (James) Hornbeak of Joplin, Missouri; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Will (Beauton) Thurman and Edgar (Lucille) Thurman Jr.; and three sisters, Irene Camper, Margaret (Everett) Jerls and Virgie (Benson) Coleman.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Chris Vaught and Mike Huffman officiating.

Committal service will be at noon Tuesday at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri, with full military honors.
