CHARLESTON -- Funeral for retired Col. Charles I. "Peachy" Lutz of Charleston will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Charleston United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rick White will officiate. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, with military rites by a detail from Fort Leonard Wood.
Friends may call at the church Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time.
McMikle Funeral Home at Charleston is in charge of arrangements.
Lutz, 90, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
He was born May 9, 1909, in Charleston, son of Charles I. and Martha Virginia Harris Lutz. He and Latane Mooring were married Dec. 6, 1935.
Lutz was an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army during World War II, retiring as commander of the 140th Infantry 2nd Battle Group Regiment. He also served in the Missouri National Guard.
He was a sign painter and also refinished furniture. He served on Charleston City Council and also had been mayor. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Charleston Lions Club, American Legion, and VFW Post 4294.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Charles Lutz of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Julie Simmons of Scottsdale; a sister, Emma Ryder of St. Louis; and two grandchildren.
