JACKSON -- Charles William "Red" Campbell, 70, of Jackson died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. JACKSON -- Charles William "Red" Campbell, 70, of Jackson died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born May 28, 1927, in Cape Girardeau, son of Fred and Dessie Runnels Campbell.

Campbell was a member of the state championship baseball team in Cape Girardeau in 1943. He played minor league baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1945 he played on the Navy All Stars baseball team in the All Star game held in the Marshall Islands. He was manager of the Little League state championship team in 1956.

He attended Southeast Missouri State University, and was a graduate of Pipefitters Trade School in Kansas City.

Campbell was a construction foreman on union jobs many years. He also was a commercial airplane pilot.

He was a member of the Democratic party, and was a candidate for city treasurer in 1960.

Campbell was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, St. Mark's Masonic Lodge 93 AF&AM, and Pipefitters Local 562 in Cape Girardeau, Elks Lodge, American Quarter Horse Association, and Union Labor Movement in Cape Girardeau.

He was the business agent with Local 318 for Pipefitters Union 12 years. He also participated in racing quarter horses.

Campbell served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and received the Victory Medal.

Survivors include a son, Terry Campbell of Jackson; a daughter, Lisa Umfleet of Jackson; a brother, Russell Campbell of Cape Girardeau; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau from 4-8 p.m. today. Masonic service will be at 7 by St. Mark's Lodge.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel, with the Rev. Clayton Smith officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery, with graveside rites by VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau.
