DEXTER -- Chalmer Wendell Wiggs, 79, of Dexter died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born April 6, 1918, near Dexter, son of James Odus and Myrl Blackman Wiggs. He and Ruth Stephens were married Dec. 31, 1933.
Wiggs formerly lived in the Leora community where he farmed, but had lived at Dexter many years.
He was employed by Farmers Insurance Group 25 years, retiring as district manager. He received many honors and awards.
Wiggs was a member of Second General Baptist Church and had served as choir director, Sunday School teacher, and held other offices over the years. As a young man he played various musical instruments, later played the organ and piano, and sung with various quartets.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Donald Wiggs of Sun City, Ariz., Leon Wiggs of Cape Girardeau, Charles Wiggs of Jonesboro, Ark., Ronald Wiggs of Dexter; a daughter, Barbara Link of Jefferson City; three brothers, J.D. Wiggs of Springfield, John Wiggs of Moberly, the Rev. Glen Wiggs of Liberty; two sisters, Lois Roberts and Naomi Stewart of Dexter; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Friends may call at Rainey Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Phil Warren, Vyron Yount and Glen Wiggs officiating. Burial will be in Bernie Cemetery at Bernie.
