CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Funeral mass for Mrs. Catherine E. Spence of Cape Girardeau will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cairo. The Rev. Jerome Fortenberry will officiate, with burial in Calvary Cemetery at Villa Ridge.

Friends may call at Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo from 5-8 p.m. today.

Mrs. Spence, 86 years old, died Wednesday, April 17, 1991, at the Lutheran Home.

She was born Aug. 28, 1904, in Cairo, daughter of Albert and Catherine Becker Schmaeng. She married Paul K. Spence, who died in 1960.

Mrs. Spence received a nursing degree from St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Ill. She was a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Cairo, retiring in 1971.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Church and Altar Guild, American Legion Auxiliary, and Alexander County Senior Citizens. She was elected Cairo Mother of the Year in 1966.

Survivors include two daughters, Anna Spence of Cairo, Catherine Spence of Newark, Del.; four sons, Dr. Paul Spence of Cape, Dr. Hugh Spence of San Antonio, Tex., Karl Spence of Milwaukee, Wis., Dr. James Spence of Farmington, N.M.; a sister, Salome Reisinger of Cairo; a brother, John Schmaeng of Rocton, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Wilhelma Spence of Cairo, and several grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, G. Michael Schmaeng.
