Carroll M. "Sam" Snead, 84, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at his home.

He was born Aug. 16, 1930, in St. Louis, to Grenville Hedrick and Edith Higgs Snead.

He and Edna Nelson were married Sept. 25, 1954, in St. Louis. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2014.

Carroll graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1954. In 1955 he began his career as a pharmacist at the Broadway Prescription Shop in Cape Girardeau. Carroll retired from that position after 55 years of service.

An avid wood carver and wood worker, Carroll was active in the formative years of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. He served as president for one year and was heavily involved in the organization, recruiting and execution of early Arts Council shows and exhibits.

Carroll was a member of the Naval Reserves from 1949 until 1961. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and enjoyed bowling on an Elks Lodge team for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Edna of Cape Girardeau; son, Darren (Kelly) of Maplewood, Missouri; and a brother, Bradford (Jo) of Ferguson, Missouri.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Linda C. Snead.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donny Ford officiating. Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Missouri Botanical Garden.
