Carrol G. "Smokey" King, 62, formerly of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Aug. 2, 2010, at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. He was born March 6, 1948, in Geff, Ill., to Darrol and Betty King. He and Sandy Pettit were married July 2, 2002.

Carrol G. "Smokey" King, 62, formerly of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Aug. 2, 2010, at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

He was born March 6, 1948, in Geff, Ill., to Darrol and Betty King. He and Sandy Pettit were married July 2, 2002.

Smokey graduated from Fairfield High School, then attended Lockyear Business College in Evansville, Ind.

He served two years in the U.S. Air Force as support evacuation during the Vietnam War.

Smokey received an engineering degree from Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel, Ill. He joined the radio family as a DJ in several states. Smokey went into engineering where he worked for several radio broadcasting companies, including Withers Broadcasting, where he worked more than 16 years.

Smokey was a member of VFW Post 3838 and Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his parents, Darrol and Betty King of Geff; wife Sandra King; a son, Samuel King; three stepdaughters, Rashanda Sanders, Nikki Nall, Rhonda Dockins; three sisters, Andra Lewis of West Frankfort, Ill., Lisa Clifton of Geff, Linda Gayer of Bone Gap, Ill.; a brother, Tom King of Geff; a granddaughter, Aaliyah; and five stepgrandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau.

Terrell Broady Funeral Home in Nashville was in charge of arrangements.
