Carol Hunter Byrd, 75, of Waynesboro, Va., died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Oak Lea Nursing Home in Harrisonburg, Va.
He was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Cape Girardeau, son of Carol Elliott and Mary Clodfelter Byrd.
Byrd received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Southeast Missouri State University, and a doctorate in analytical chemistry from Iowa State University.
He worked at DuPont Co. in Kinston, N.C., 30 years, retiring in 1983. He attended St. John's Catholic Church. He was past president of the former Home School Association and of Waynesboro Friends of the Library.
Byrd served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory and Mary Byrd of Longmont, Colo., Christopher and Kimberley Byrd of West Hartford, Conn.; four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Charles Byrd of Colorado, Edward and Kent Byrd of Connecticut; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, the Rev. Clyde E. Byrd.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Church. Msgr. John T. Cilinski and the Rev. Lou Ruoff will officiate. Burial will be private at Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call at McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, and after the Mass Thursday at the church.
