MOUNDS, Ill. -- Carl W. "Big Wind" Meeks, 83, of Mounds died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at his home, following an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 18, 1924, son of Everett and Grace Meeks.
Meeks had worked for Illinois Highway Department and retired from Illinois Department of Corrections.
He was a truck driver with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Germany, France and England. He received the European Theater of Operations Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Sharpshooter Badge.
Survivors include three sons, Carletos and Don Meeks of Mounds, Jerry Meeks of Milwaukee; a daughter, Karen Meeks of Mounds; five stepchildren, Devra Edwards of East St. Louis, Ill., Donna and Darrell Young of Memphis, Tenn., Onesia Young of Mounds, and Lionel Crenshaw of St. Louis; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and a stepgrandson.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Massie Funeral Home in Mounds.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donnell Wilson officiating. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Mound City National Cemetery with military honors provided by Pulaski County VFW Post 8891.
