TAMMS, Ill. -- Carl Lewis Hileman, 89, of Tamms died Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, at his home.
He was born June 5, 1929, in Mill Creek, Illinois, the son of Carl and Susie Poole Hileman. He married Margaret Ann Donahue on Nov. 10, 1950, in Cairo, Illinois. She preceded him in death June 11, 2012.
Carl was a decorated veteran of the Korean War and received numerous medals, including four Bronze Stars. He is a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Jonesboro, Illinois. He retired from the Postal Service, where he worked as postmaster of Tamms for many years.
Carl was a long-time board member for the Village of Tamms and Capaha Bank. He worked tirelessly to see the Veterans Memorial in Tamms built, as well as having the Tamms Historic Depot remodeled. Carl was the oldest of 11. His greatest joys were his grandchildren and spending time with all his family.
Carl is survived by his two sons, Carl E. (Sharon) Hileman of Tamms and Doug (Elizabeth) Hileman of Cape Girardeau; daughter, Annette Stiff of Tamms; seven grandchildren, Bryan (Bree) Hileman of Mounds, Illinois, Bridgette (Derek) Prater of Locust Grove, Georgia, Carl (Erica) Stiff of Goreville, Illinois, Matthew (Kate) Hileman of Springfield, Illinois, Andrew Hileman of Cape Girardeau, Jennifer (Chris) Guenther of St. Charles, Missouri, and Lindsay Hesselmeyer (James Levins) of Thebes, Illinois; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Charlie (Barb) Hileman of Evansville, Indiana, Ron Hileman of Anna, Illinois, Joe (Dottie) Hileman of Bloomington, Illinois, Joyce Mowery of Dongola, Illinois, Jessie Hileman of Tunnel Hill, Illinois, Terry (Carol) Hileman of Anna, Sharon (Terry) Osman of Anna and Phil Hileman of Jonesboro; numerous nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret Ann; sisters, Elaine Hunter and Nadine Jordan; brothers-in-law, Karol Lee Hunter and Carroll Mowery; and sister-in-law, Elaine Hileman.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Pastor Mark Hasty officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 of VFW in Anna and the Illinois Army National Guard Military Honor Team of Marion, Illinois.
Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Lutheran Church or Illinois Veterans Home Activity Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
