CHAFFEE -- Funeral services for Carl E. W. Mantel, 74, of Chaffee, were held Saturday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Chaffee. The Rev. B. G. Corn and Rev. Lynn Corn officiated. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
Mantel died Thursday, Sept. 19 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 16, 1917 in Clarion, Iowa to Carl W. and Laura L. Webb Mantel.
On Aug. 22, 1943, Mantel married Dora Easter Shores, who survives, along with his step-mother, Novella Mantel of Chaffee; one son, Charles Ray Mantel of Chaffee; two daughters, Clara Wilke of Dallas, Tex., and Connie Smith of Jackson.
Also surviving is one brother, Mike Mantel of Chaffee, three sisters, Marietta Gilmer, Barbara Arnold, and Bonnie Rister, all of Chaffee, and nine grandsons.
Mantel was a Navy veteran and served in the Army in World War II. He was a member of the Chaffee Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Division 595, in Chaffee, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Mantel retired as a locomotive engineer from the Burlington Northern Railroad and the St. Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) Railroad in Chaffee.
