Calvin C. Vogelsang, 82, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born July 9, 1925, in Cape Gir-ardeau, son of Erwin C.R. and Emelie M. Frank Vogelsang. He married E. Glenneta Allen Aug. 15, 1947, in Cape Girardeau.

Vogelsang was a graduate of Trinity Lutheran School and Central High School, and attended Southeast Missouri State University.

He served in the U.S. Army 70th Infantry Trailblazers Division, I Company, 274th Regiment during World War ll, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, European Theater and American Theater Ribbons, two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, World War ll Victory Medal and the Liberation de la France Citation. He participated in Rhineland and Ardennes Campaigns in southern France, and was wounded in Forbach, Germany.

Vogelsang was a letter carrier 35 years with the U.S. Post Office in Cape Girardeau, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of VFW Post 3838 62 years, serving as commander at the local, district and state levels. He served as national council member on various committees. He was a member of American Legion Post 63, National Letter Carriers Association, and 70th Infantry Division Association.

Vogelsang was instrumental in organizing the Avenue of Flags at Cape County Park. He was appointed by then Gov. Kit Bond as a member of the Missouri Veterans Commission which was instrumental in placement of a veterans home in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include his wife, E. Glenneta Vogelsang of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Sharon Stausing and husband Sam of Union, Mo.; three sons, David Vogelsang and wife Apryl of Grapevine, Texas, Steven Vogelsang of Cape Girardeau, Dan Vogelsang and wife Jean of Houston; two sisters, Erma Oliver of Columbia, Mo., Bernice Baumstark of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Robert Vogelsang of Farmington, Mo.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Douglas C. Breite officiating. Burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by VFW Post 3838 and Missouri Honors Team.
