A memorial service for retired Cmdr. Byron W. Mercer of Pensacola, Fla., will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Azalea Trace Auditorium. Chaplain Jim Hansen will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Barrancas National Cemetery.
Cedar Hill Chapel in Pensacola is in charge of arrangements.
Mercer, 80, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, in a Pensacola nursing facility.
He was born Aug. 7, 1918, at Vanduser.
Mercer moved to Pensacola 14 years ago from Cape Girardeau. He was retired from the U.S. Navy, and was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Berniece; a daughter, Jeanne Orsini of Stafford, Va.; two sons, Rodney Mercer of Tucson, Ariz., Duane Mercer of Lenexa, Kan.; a sister, Normagene Deck of Cape Girardeau; and five grandchildren.
