CHARLESTON -- Funeral service for Birdie Barnes of Bessemer, Ala., formerly of Charleston, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at McMikle Funeral Chapel here. The Rev. Gerald Collier will officiate, with burial in IOOF Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Mrs. Barnes, 74 years old, died Sunday, March 10, 1991, at Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.

She was born July 13, 1915, in Athens, Ala., daughter of Andrew and Mary Herd Abernathy. She married Claude R. Barnes, who died June 7, 1968.

Mrs. Barnes moved to Bessemer in 1980, where she was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice McCray of Kenner, La., Shirley Sansing of Bessemer; three brothers, Homer Abernathy of Dexter, Woodrow Abernathy of Kennett, Bill Abernathy of Piggott, Ark.; two sisters, Audrey Pitts and Grace Holland of Kennett, and five grandchildren.
