MARBLE HILL -- Billy J. Gilmore, former Marble Hill police chief and city councilman, died Friday, Nov. 29, 1991 at the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was 63.
Gilmore, of Marble Hill, was born Nov. 12, 1928 at Cairo, Ill., the son of Clifton and Alice Barbee Gilmore. They survive of Marble Hill.
On Sept. 26, 1948, he married Betty Fisher. She survives of Marble Hill.
In addition, he is survived by two sons, Mike Gilmore, in the U.S. Air Force stationed in California, Bill Gilmore, Byron, Ga.; one sister, Peggy Hansen, St. Charles; and three grandchildren.
Gilmore retired from the U.S. Army in 1968. He was involved in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During the Vietnam War he received the Air Medal and Bronze Star. He also received numerous other citations during his 20 years of service.
He was of the Methodist faith and had moved to Marble Hill in 1968, when he retired from the military.
He was serving on the Marble Hill Planning and Zoning Park Board at the time of his death.
Gilmore had been a city councilman, Marble Hill police chief, a deputy with the Bollinger County Sheriff's Department, and past president of VFW Post 5900.
Friends may call today from 6-9 p.m. at Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill.
Funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Bill Sargent officiating. Burial will follow in Bollinger County Memorial Park Cemetery near Marble Hill.
