John W. "Bill" Likens of Cape Girardeau, 96, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2020.

Born in Marion, Illinois, May 24, 1924, he was the son of Lloyd Christopher and Vivian Marie Davis Likens.

Bill proudly served his country in World War II from 1943 to 1946 as a U.S. Army Infantry scout in the European Theater. After the war, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1948.

His first job was with Phillips Petroleum in the oil fields of Wyoming. After moving to Cape Girardeau in 1950, he worked for Missouri Utilities Co. for more than 37 years.

He was a longtime member and deacon of Abbey Road Christian Church. He was an avid member of Kiwanis Club for over 30 years, as well as being past president. He was also a longtime member and past president of Toastmasters Club. One of the many ways Bill gave back to his community was as a volunteer: as a judge for Cape Girardeau Central High School science fair, delivering Meals on Wheels, helping build the Jaycees Golf Course, and finally working on the Red House in Cape Girardeau.

After retiring from volunteering, he finished his first century (100-mile) bike ride at the age of 83. As he would say: "Good night! I can't believe I made it to 96."

Fishing, fishing, fishing and more fishing. Fishing was his favorite pastime, but he also enjoyed hunting, camping, biking and traveling. He passed this love of fishing on to whomever he could.

The Fisherman's Prayer

God grant that I may live to fish, until my dying day.

And when it comes to my last cast, I then must humbly pray.

When in the Lord's safe landing net, I'm peacefully asleep.

That in his mercy I'll be judged, As big enough to keep.

Bill's proudest accomplishment was raising three children: John W. Likens II, Dr. Christopher P. Likens and Bradley K. Ferguson. They and their wives -- Cathy Likens, Dr. Nancy Wilson and Pat Ferguson -- along with their children, were a great joy and comfort to him. Bill was blessed with seven grandchildren, David (Kim) Likens, Jim Likens, Sarah Likens, Robert Likens, Andrew (Rachel) Likens, Morgan Likens and Shannon Ferguson; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his wife, Iris Likens, and a sister, Dorothy Jane Boyd.

In lieu of flowers, Bill would like you to donate to Abbey Road Christian Church of Cape Girardeau in his name.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Online condolences may be made at www.fordandsonsfuneralhome.com.
