Betty J. Smith, 76, of Jackson died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Chateau Girardeau Health Center in Cape Girardeau. She had lived there since Jan. 21.

Smith was born Nov. 3, 1932, in Jackson, to Chester C. and Mildred B. Clippard Smith.

Smith graduated from Jackson High School in 1951. She worked at the former Jackson Hosiery Mill, the old Saint Francis Hospital, 35 years for the late Dr. Fred E. Rawlins in Cape Girardeau, Estes Deli at its previous location in Jackson and most recently Stooges Restaurant in Jackson until failing health rendered her unable to work.

She was a member of Shawnee Hills Baptist Church in Jackson and was a past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 91 in Jackson.

Survivors include five sisters, Saundra O'Loughlin, Magdalene Brotherton, Carolyn Schreiner, all of Jackson, Peggy Jones of Carlyle, Ill., Mary B. Kutscher of Marion, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Don Estes officiating.

Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
