Elizabeth Rachael "Betty" Self, 90, of Jackson passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, at Jackson Manor Nursing Home, where she resided the past five years.

Born Dec. 6, 1927, in Cape Girardeau, she was the only child of Carl O. and Emilie Paar Boltz. She married Francis A. Self, and five children were born to their union.

Betty was raised in Jackson. She was a graduate of Jackson High School and later earned her teaching degree from Southeast Missouri State University. She taught at the elementary schools in Greenville and Malden, Missouri.

She was a lifelong member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson. She served many years in the church nursery and was formerly active in the Bethany Circle. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and playing cards.

Loving survivors include four children, Beverly (Larry) Koehler and Carol (Jeff) Poole, both of Jackson, John (Kathy) Self of Coalinga, California, and Dennis (Kelley) Self of Strafford, Missouri; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous foster and stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Mealey, and her parents.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Revs. Joe Rowley and Sam Roethemeyer officiating. Burial will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Margaret Puchbauer Scholarship Fund, c/o Emanuel United Church of Christ.
