Betty Reid

Betty Whelan Reid, 82, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, at the Lutheran Home.

She was born Sept. 21, 1929, in Murphysboro, Ill., to Glen Exmond and Zola Geneva Thompson Haney. She and Lawrence Whelan were married Feb. 25, 1950, in Waterloo, Ill. He died Jan. 16, 1991. She later married Sigmund Reid on Oct. 23, 1993, in Ste. Genevieve, Mo. He died Dec. 25, 2000.

Betty was a former member of VFW auxiliaries in Cape Girardeau, Ste. Genevieve and Waterloo, and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Waterloo.

She was a waitress at the Bee Hive Restaurant in Waterloo.

Betty returned to Cape Girardeau in 1994 after having lived here previously. She was a former member of First Assembly of God in Jackson and its choir.

Survivors include a son, Larry Whelan of Cape Girardeau; a stepson, Thomas Reid of Houston; a daughter, Brenda Lufcy of Cape Girardeau; a stepdaughter, Robyn Mannix of Belle Mead, N.J.; a sister, Bonnie Kannewurf of Columbia, Ill.; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Lawrence Whelan and Sigmund Reid; and a sister, Margaret Johanning.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Boettcher officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, with a committal service at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday.
