JACKSON -- Rebecca "Betty" McDowell Harper, 75, of Jackson died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at her home.
She was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Herrin, Ill., daughter of Harvey C. and Ruth Morgan Jones. She first married Eugene E. McDowell June 26, 1949, in Augusta, Ga. He died Sept. 9, 1970. She and Bob Harper were married Oct. 28, 1989, at Jackson.
Harper was employed several years in the Cape County Collector's Office, and was a partner in BeMac Inc.
She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, former Sunday School teacher and choir member, and was one of the first women to be elected elder. She wrote and produced the Presbyterian Fun Breakfast and held many offices in the church.
Harper was a member of D.J. Chapter of PEO and held many offices; active at Jackson Senior Center and was currently president of the Site Council and active in the Meals on Wheels program.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Ashby Scott McDowell of Jackson, Patrick Kent McDowell of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Secretary of State Rebecca Cook of Cape Girardeau and Jefferson City; and three grandchildren.
Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4-8 p.m. today, and Friday after 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Grant Gillard officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.
