Bernard Broshuis

Bernard J. "Ben" Broshuis, 83, of Jackson passed away Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Oct. 2, 1920, in Marble Hill, Mo., son of Ben and Elizabeth Wubker Holzum Broshuis. He and Johanna Holzum were married Feb. 27, 1943, at Guardian Angel Church in St. Louis.

Ben enlisted in the U.S. Army Aug. 28, 1942. He served as an engineer with the 161st Airborne, and was honorably discharged Jan. 26, 1946.

He moved to Jackson in 1950 and became employed at Elfrink Construction Co., where he worked as a foreman in commercial construction in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. He was still active in the business.

Ben had been a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church since 1950, and served on the building committee that coordinated the construction of the current church. He was also a 3rd Degree member of Bishop Timon Knights of Columbus Council 6405 in Jackson.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Mike Elfrink and Brenda and Norman Grass of Jackson; four grandchildren, Stephen Elfrink of Lenexa, Kan., Leann Hendrix of Cape Girardeau, Kathy Elfrink of Jackson, Brian Grass of St. Louis; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and five sisters.

Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. Parish prayers will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by the rosary led by Bishop Timon Knights of Columbus.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, with Msgr. Edward Eftink officiating and the Rev. Tom Kiefer as concelebrant. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery, with Missouri Military Honors.
