Bernard "Bernie" Bierschwal, 85, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born Dec. 26, 1914, son of Louis and Anna Hargens Bierschwal. He and Ruth Sailer were married Dec. 19, 1948, at Cape Girardeau.
Bierschwal worked in the family business, the former Bierschwal Meat Market, at Cape Girardeau for many years. He also worked at the former Hirsch's Thrift Way and the Riverside Lumber Co. He retired in 1976.
He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church at Gordonville before transferring his membership to the Hanover Lutheran Church at Cape Girardeau in 1983. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Wayne Horton of Tyler, Texas; a brother, Edward Bierschwal of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Louise Grojean of Gordonville and Evelyn Statler of Kempton, Ill.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the McCombs Funeral Home at Cape Girardeau.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Jeff Sippy officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
