ADVANCE, Mo. -- James "Benton" Long, 87, of Advance passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 14, 2017.

Benton was born April 29, 1929, at Advance, the son of Bland and Minnie Welker Long.

Benton was a lifelong farmer. He also was a carpenter for many years and built several houses.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He earned a Bronze Star. He also enjoyed hunting.

Benton and Louise Revelle were united in marriage at Piggott, Arkansas, and she survives.

Other survivors include a son, Dennis (Marlene) Long of Cape Girardeau; three brothers, Earshel Long of Pocahontas, Arkansas, Lonnie Long of Palm Springs, California, and Charles Long of North Carolina; three sisters, Jerry Moore, Mella Lee Eaker and Maxine Myer, all of Advance; and two grandchildren, Lexis Long and Jonathan Long, both of Cape Girardeau.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Parks Long; and a sister, Nadine Robinson.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel, with the Rev. Fred Ritter officiating. Burial will be at Morgan Memorial Park in Advance, with full military rites.
