Barney Miller

DEXTER, Mo. -- Longtime newsman Barney Miller, 81, of Dexter died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at his home.

He was born July 14, 1920, in Lutesville, Mo., son of Robert and Elizabeth Trotter Miller.

He and Marie Braidlow were married June 6, 1942, in Rolla, Mo. She died Dec. 26, 1994.

He was former owner and newspaper publisher for the Dexter Daily Statesman, a member of the Missouri Press Association, past president of the Southeast Missouri Press Association and 1998 inductee to the Missouri Newspaper Hall of Fame.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in World War II.

An active member of the Dexter community, Miller was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He also belonged to the Dexter Kiwanis Club and was a volunteer literacy tutor at the Mingo Job Corps.

He was past president of the Chamber of Commerce, a former Elks Citizen of the Year, a former member of the Dexter Zoning Commission and a former member of the Dexter Library Board.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Miller of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Joe Miller of Jonesboro, Ill.; a daughter, Annabeth Miller of Dexter; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, three brothers and a sister.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Dexter, with the Rev. Fred Leist officiating. Burial will follow in Dexter Cemetery.
