CUMMING, Ga. -- Barbara Elaine Grossheider Venz, 75, passed away quietly Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at the Villas at Canterbury in Cumming, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Her family was at her side. Barbara was born Nov. 22, 1941, in Cape Girardeau to Alvin and Elsie Grossheider. She was the last of eight girls born to the family. CUMMING, Ga. -- Barbara Elaine Grossheider Venz, 75, passed away quietly Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at the Villas at Canterbury in Cumming, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Her family was at her side.

Barbara was born Nov. 22, 1941, in Cape Girardeau to Alvin and Elsie Grossheider. She was the last of eight girls born to the family. They were Edina, Lorene, Ruth, Francis and Roberta. Two sisters, Eleanor Haman and Jean McHenry, live in Cape Girardeau.

Barbara graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in education. She received a master's degree in education from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Barbara taught in high schools in St. Louis and Jefferson City. She also taught computer science at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.

Barbara and family moved to Atlanta, where she worked as a senior manager for a large telecom company where she retired. She then moved to South Carolina, where she enjoyed gardening, boating and square dancing.

She married Gary Venz on June 30, 1962, in Cape Girardeau. Gary survives at the home.

She also is survived by her daughter, Susan (Steve) O'Neill of Atlanta; son, Steven (Susan Derwin) Venz of Sherman Oaks, California; and four grandchildren, Taylor and Ryan O'Neill and Allison and Daniel Venz.

A memorial service will be at a later date in Cape Girardeau and interment will be in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
