Avis L. Muench, 100, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born Sept. 15, 1915, in Bethany, Missouri, the daughter of Orley W. and Eva M. Bartlett. In 1936, she married Carl Julius Muench Sr. in Higginsville, Missouri.

Avis taught music and voice in Texas and in Northwest and Southeast Missouri. Many of her voice students won top awards and gave her credit for their successful musical careers. Avis was an active member and organist at several churches.

She loved antiques and was a “picker” for several dealers.

Avis is survived by two sons, Carl (Barbara) Muench Jr. of Cape Girardeau and Hubert (Jeannie) Muench of Tucson, Arizona; a daughter, Mary (John) Hartman of Hendersonville, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Lynda Muench and Amy (Tim) Gosnell of Sikeston, Missouri, Patti (Doug) Dobbs of Clarksville, Tennessee, Danny Muench of Hawaii and David Muench of Denver; and three great-grandchildren, Aaron and Meagan Dobbs and Trey Gosnell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; sisters, Vesper and Gladys; daughter-in-law, Marie; grandson, Carl “Trey” Muench III; and two nieces, Midge and Phyllis.

A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, 101 N. Fountain St., Cape Girardeau, with the Revs. Edie Bird, Bob Towner and Patricia Williams officiating. A reception will be at the church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 14 at IOOF Cemetery in Charleston, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or to the Avis Muench Vocal Scholarship Fund, c/o Citizens Bank of Charleston, 207 E. Commercial St., Charleston, MO 63834.
