Autrie Pounds Sr.

Autrie Pounds Sr., 82, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at Thorek Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago.

He was born Jan. 13, 1921, in Tupelo, Miss., the son of Benjamin and Vera Bolden Pounds.

He was a member of the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church in Chicago, serving on the usher board.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He had been employed by the Quaker Oats Company in West Memphis, Ark., and by the Zenith Corporation in Chicago.

He is survived by seven children, Richard Pounds Sr. of Sacramento, Calif., Cleothis Pounds of Atlanta, Ga., Autrie Pounds Jr., Gloria Pounds and Carol Pounds, all of Chicago, McEvoy Pounds of Hammond, Ind., and Nomie Whitaker of Mounds, Ill.; five stepchildren, Willard Mathis, Jimmie Pounds and Daphane Jackson, all of Olmsted, Ill., Vivian Turton of Chicago, and Anthony Scott of Hinesville, Ga.; four sisters, Gertha Waite of Detroit, Mich., Nimmie Holt of Memphis, Tenn., Mary Lightner of Atlanta, and Marvalene Lightner of Sioux City, Iowa; and 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jessie May Pounds, two sons, a daughter, three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the hour of services Sunday at the Bethel Temple Church of God in Christ in Mounds. Services will be at noon Sunday at the church with Carl J. Whitaker officiating. Burial will be at noon Monday at Mound City National Cemetery. Algee's Funeral Home in Carbondale, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.
