Austin Glennon Harter, 83, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Nov. 9, 1914, at Weingarten, son of Henry J. and Mary Beard Harter. He married Esther J. Moe of Bayfield, Wis., on April 27, 1942, at Forte Lewis, Wash.

Harter graduated from Farmington High School and Mineral Area Community College.

He organized Company F of the 1140th Infantry, which is now Company B of the 1140th Engineers of the Missouri National Guard in Perryville. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1964 after 33 years in active and reserve duty.

He owned the former Perryville Ice Co. In 1964, he purchased the Pure Ice Co. of Cape Girardeau, which he owned until 1976.

Harter was a former member of the Perryville VFW Post 4282 and the American Legion Post 133.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Cape Girardeau. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1111 in Cape Girardeau. He was also a past president of the Holy Name Society in Perryville.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, A. Glennon Harter II of Cape Girardeau and Richard Harter of Thebes, Ill.; two daughters, Julie Harter of Cape Girardeau and Mary Harter of Thornton, Colo.; a sister, Christina Vordenfeld of Melbourn, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel, with parish prayers said at 5:30 and the Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30.

Funeral will at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Vincent de Paul Church. The Rev. Milton Ryan will officiate, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 3838.
