EAST PRAIRIE -- Funeral service for Asberry Garland of East Prairie will be held at 2 p.m. today at Shelby Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Carroll Gibbons will officiate, with burial in East Prairie Memorial Park Cemetery.
Garland, 83, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 1994, at his home.
He was born Jan. 30, 1911, in Danville, Ala., son of Lish and Dellar Kemp Garland. He and Bertha Burns were married June 3, 1970.
Garland was retired from Himmelberger-Harrison Co. in Morehouse. He was a member of Primitive Baptist Church in Morehouse. He moved to East Prairie 24 years ago from Morehouse. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; three stepsons, Larry Loomis of Blytheville, Ark., Gary Loomis of East Alton, Ill., Dennis Loomis of East Prairie; two stepdaughters, Lelia Wade of Arlington, Ky., Floetta Byrd of Blytheville; two brothers, Bill Garland of Albany, Ala., James McCarter of Ponchatoula, La.; a sister, Jean Griffin of Janesville, Wis.; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, a daughter and brother.
