CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Ameil J. Powell, 80, of Sikeston died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

He was born Sept. 24, 1923, in Supply, Ark., son of Perry James and Mary Parlee Halliard Powell. He married Mary Martha McCormick Oct. 23, 1956.

He had lived in Sikeston since 1974, and had previously lived in Charleston, Mo. He was employed with Southern Towing Co. of Memphis until his retirement. He was a member of the Elm Street Baptist Church in Charleston, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Ameil J. "Jimmy" Powell of Charleston; four daughters, Janet McMillan, Karen Stallings, Mary F. "Doddie" Vaughn, all of Sikeston, and Peggy Jepsen of Charleston; a stepson, Larry Lynn of Erwin, N.C.; a brother, Jimmy Poore of Sikeston; five sisters, Imo Cooper and Ruby Poore, both of East Prairie, Mo., Flo Welch and Gayle Nelson, both of St. Louis, and Leatrice Orendoff of Jackson; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson and four brothers.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. David Craig officiating.

The Missouri Military Funeral Honor Guard will provide military graveside rites at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston where burial will follow.
