Ambrose W. Peters, 79, of Marble Hill, Mo., died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born May 19, 1929, in Lutesville, Mo., son of Theodore J. and Katherine (Katie) Hinkebein Peters.
Ambrose married Patricia Ann Welter on Oct. 15, 1955, in Benton, Mo. She survives along with their six children, Cindy (Lindy) Jansen of Leopold, Mo., Donna (Michael) Kasten of Tilsit, Jean (Bob) Clubb of Marble Hill, Chris (Carol Ann) Peters of Cape Girardeau, Tim Peters of Marble Hill and Valerie Peters of Imperial, Mo. His 10 grandchildren are Dustin, Ashley, Clayton and Jordan Jansen; Tyler Clubb; Allison, Brandon, Nikki and Tanner Peters; and Seth Peters.
He is also survived by three brothers, Januar, Ted J. and Mark Peters of Marble Hill; and three sisters, Sister Marie Ambrose SSND of St. Louis, Margie Ann Eftink of Marble Hill and Bonnie Diebold of Dresden, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ambrose D. Peters, a granddaughter, Amber Marie Clubb, his parents and three brothers.
Ambrose was an active member of his church and community. He was a parishioner at St. John's Catholic Church, past Grand Knight of the Leopold Knights of Columbus and past Faithful Navigator of the Leopold St. John's Assembly of the Fourth Degree. He served on the Leopold School Board and the Leopold Volunteer Fire Department and was a Farm Bureau Board member for 32 years.
He used his talents and skills as a carpenter for Cliff Nall Construction and Peters' Supply Co. He then changed his profession to the U.S. Postal Service, starting as a mail carrier for Howard Shell, continuing as a postal clerk for the Lutesville Post Office and retiring as Postmaster at Leopold in January 1997.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Hutchings Funeral Home in Marble Hill. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with Fr. Jeff Fasching officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Leopold with military honors.
