DANVILLE, Ill. -- Alvin C. Scheeter, 81, of Danville passed away at 1:40 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois.

He was born April 20, 1938, the son of Otto and Mamie Westrich Scheeter in New Hamburg, Missouri. He married Claudine Messmer on June 20, 1964, in Kelso, Missouri, and she survives.

Al was an avid sports fan. Anything with a ball, he loved. He loved the St Louis Cardinals, win or lose. Al was honored to play second base for the New Hamburg Shindler's Tavern Fast Pitch Softball Team, winning the 1967 state championship.

He was employed by Bunge Milling as vice president of transportation for 35 years to the day he retired. He started with Bunge Milling and retired with Bunge Milling.

Al was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Danville and the Knights of Columbus. He was a Red Vest volunteer for 16 years, logging 9,000 hours.

Al and Claudine lovingly planted and cared for all the flowers and trimmed all the shrubs at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Danville for 12 years.

His favorite hobby was giving his time and sharing his talents with others and gardening, especially his lawn, which he manicured. He was proud of his "designer cut." Al also loved reading, especially financial magazines.

Al is survived by his wife, Claudine Scheeter of Danville; sister, Arabella Stike; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews, as well as Alvin and Claudine's "adopted" son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Holley Lerner.

Al was one of 13 children. One sister died in infancy before his birth, and he was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and five sisters. His oldest sister, Arabella Stike, will be 102 years old June 21.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St. in Danville, with a 3:30 p.m. rosary service prior to visitation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 1303 N. Walnut St. in Danville, with the Rev. Bowan Schmitt officiating. Al will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery, with military rites accorded by American Legion Post 210.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul's Catholic Church, 1303 N. Walnut St., Danville, IL 61832; Schlarman Academy, 2112 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61832; or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital/ALSAC, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
