SIKESTON, Mo. -- Alice Cox, 87, of Sikeston, formerly of Cairo, Illinois, died Saturday, June 9, 2018, at her daughter's home in Sikeston.
She was born Jan. 21, 1931, in Chicago, the daughter of James A. and Winnifred Connell Bennett.
Alice spent the majority of her life in Pulaski and Alexander counties in Illinois. She was a bookkeeper employed with C.J. Walston's Tobacco for several years and was the Alexander County deputy treasurer. She retired from the Illinois State Police, District No. 22.
She was a member of Mighty Rivers Worship Center in Cairo. Alice was also a past member of the Cairo Business and Professional Women's Club, served seven years as president of the Alexander County Republican Women, was a member of the Theta Phi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and in 1977 was chosen for "Who's Who of American Women."
She is survived by her son, James C. Hassinger of St. Charles, Missouri; daughter, Dawn A. Hassinger of Sikeston; sister, Caroline (Roy) Dakin of Mounds, Illinois; brothers, John D. (Mary) Stout of Westerville, Ohio, and Robert Bennett of Naperville, Illinois; grandchildren, James C., David A. and Katherine Hassinger; stepsons, Patrick (Maureen) Cox of Greenville, Kentucky, Bayne (Dianne) Cox of Paducah, Kentucky, and Michael (Debbie) Cox of Evansville, Indiana; stepdaughter, Jamie (Rex) Feezor of Paducah; daughter-in-law, Dianna Mills of Terra Haute, Indiana; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren, including Angie Cox Simmons of Cairo.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, J. Paul Stout; son, Michael Mills; granddaughter, Misti Dawn Mills; great-grandson, James Christopher Hassinger; brother, James R. Bennett; and husband, James D. Cox.
Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mighty Rivers Worship Center in Cairo.
Funeral will follow at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with Dr. Larry Potts officiating. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Mound City (Illinois) National Cemetery.
Memorial contribution may be made to the Villa Ridge American Legion Ritual Team. Envelopes will be available at the church.
