PATTON, Mo. — Albert "Al" Joseph Zimmer, 81, of Patton passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Feb. 17, 1942, in Munich, Germany, son of Joseph and Lieselotte "Lotte" Kleinschmidt Zimmer. He and Linda Joyce Mayfield were united in marriage July 29, 1967, in Belleville, Illinois. She survives.
Al moved to St. Louis as a child with his parents and his younger sister, Inge. He attended college at Southeast Missouri State University, after he honorably served in the U.S. Navy, where he met the love of his life, Linda.
Together, Al and Linda made their lifelong home on Linda's family farm in Bollinger County, where they raised their daughters and farmed. Al retired from farming last summer, when his health began to fail him. In addition to farming, Al worked for the Department of Public Safety at Southeast Missouri State University from 1996 until retirement in 2012.
Al had a strong Christian faith and loved spending time with his pride and joys, his grandchildren, Olive, Dawson and Perry.
Loving survivors include his wife of 55 years, Linda; two daughters, Martha (Jackson) Bollinger of Jackson and Sarah (Floyd) Masters of Roberts, Montana; three grandchildren, Olive and Perry Bollinger of Jackson and Dawson Masters of Roberts; and a sister, Inge (Phil) Holland.
Al was preceded in death by his parents.
A visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday, July 10, in Chapel A at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
Funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Monday, July 10, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donny Ford officiating. Interment, with full military honors, will follow in Pulliam Cemetery near Patton.
Pallbearers will be Jamie Mayfield, Scott Mayfield, Floyd Masters, Jackson Bollinger, Jordan Mayfield and Jared Mayfield.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
