Albert Franklin Cox, 89, of Cape Girardeau passed away Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at his home.
He was born Dec. 31, 1926, at Green Cox, Missouri, son of the late Franklin and Dosha Cox. Albert married the love of his life, the late Francis L. Nothdurft on April, 27 1952.
Due to his father’s death while Albert was in high school and being the oldest of four, he helped to run the family farm until he was called to service in the Korean War in September 1950, and being honorably discharged in June of 1952 as corporal of the 31st Infantry Regiment having earned the Combat Infantry Badge, as well as Service Medal with three bronze stars.
Upon his return to Cape Girardeau, Albert began an almost 40-year career with AmerenUE and its predecessors, where he finished his career in 1991 as an area supervisor. Albert took pride in his work and enjoyed helping to keep Cape Girardeau’s power on during storms and unfortunate events, once staying up for two days helping to restore power during the snowstorm of 1979. Due to different injuries throughout his career, it was joked that Albert had “nine lives.”
He had an unforgettable voice, which he displayed while singing in a gospel quartet, as well as being a licensed auctioneer for many years. He also was an accomplished coon hunter, owning numerous award-winning dogs throughout the years.
After playing basketball in high school, Albert had a passion for basketball that endured his entire life. He was a Southeast Missouri State University booster and season-ticket holder for many years. It was a common occurrence for basketball talk at every family function, and he always enjoyed watching the national championship game with his niece Ella Jo.
He was a charter member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, where he served as a church elder as well as usher captain. Albert was a coffee-shop guy who loved his family. Whether it was having coffee with Donna and Kenny, “gallivanting” with David while talking basketball, discussing Cardinals baseball with Robbie or traveling around town with Danielle, he enjoyed every minute with his family. Albert lived for his family and he will be sorely missed by them.
He is survived by a daughter, Donna (Kenny) Wallace; a son, David Cox; a grandson, Robbie (Carrie) Guard; a granddaughter, Danielle Cox, all of Cape Girardeau; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Alma Moore; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, father, mother and two brothers.
