Zimmer Radio Group has become the fourth owner of the building that houses a NationsBank branch at Mount Auburn Road and Independence.

The building, which will serve as corporate headquarters for the radio group, will also remain a branch bank. Zimmer has 27 radio stations in Missouri and Southern Illinois.

The Zimmer Group purchased the building from NationsBank.

"The bank has signed a lease to remain in a portion of the building," said Jerry Zimmer, president of Zimmer Radio Group. The building will also serve as headquarters for two more Zimmer operations: MVP Net and MVP Communications.

The bank building was constructed in 1983 by Centerre Bank before it was acquired by Boatmen's Bank. Boatmen's owned the building until earlier this year, when Boatmen's was acquired by NationsBank.

"We have signed a long-term lease with the Zimmer Radio Group, and we're pleased with our new landlord," said David D. Hodge, regional executive of NationsBank's Southeast Missouri-Illinois region.

NationsBank indicated early on that it would keep Boatmen's Bank's newest headquarters building at 2001 William, but would sell off properties at a downtown location at Broadway and Main and on Mount Auburn Road, hopefully with options of keeping some operations at both sites.

The city of Cape Girardeau purchased the downtown building for the Convention and Visitors Bureau less than two months ago, with the agreement that the bank would retain an automatic teller machine there.

Zimmer purchased the Mount Auburn building recently, and has completed movement into a portion of the structure.

Zimmer Radio Group's most recent acquisitions are a station in Poplar Bluff and two at Jefferson City. The company has some other deals in the making.

Zimmer Group has plans for two new buildings -- a 10,000-square-foot building at Poplar Bluff to house the group's three stations, KWOC, KKLR and KIE0Z, and a 12,000-square-foot building near Crainville, Ill., along Route 13 between Carbondale and Marion, to house six stations in that area.

Zimmer Group, which incorporated in 1983 with a 10-person operation, now has stations in Jefferson City, Columbia, Joplin, Poplar Bluff, Sikeston and Cape Girardeau, in Missouri; and in the Carbondale and Marion area in Southern Illinois.

In addition, the company has MVP Net and MVP Communications in Cape Girardeau.

Zimmer radio has been in operation for more than 40 years. The Zimmers include brothers Jerry, Don, James, John, and David, and their father, Jerome Zimmer, who opened his first radio station at Dexter in 1956.
