The Youth United Way annual appreciation dinner was held recently at Dexter Barbecue in Cape Girardeau to honor 2006-2007 members for their dedication and as a farewell to graduating seniors. The dinner concluded with the presentation of grants to local organizations. Area school campaigns raised nearly $22,000, and the Youth United Way members were asked to help allocate the funds they raised. Community grants were awarded to groups and organizations whose programs directly affect teen substance abuse and teen pregnancy. Grant requests were limited to $2,500.
Graduating seniors honored at the dinner were Carsen Bahn of Central High School; Kelley Kasten of Jackson High School; Jackie Hoehn of Saxony Lutheran High School; Maurina Matlock of Scott City High School; and Jordan Voss of Notre Dame Regional High School.
Grant recipients included Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, Boys and Girls Club of Cape Girardeau, Community Caring Council, Girl Scouts Otahki Council, Perry County Community Task Force, Scott City schools and Teen Pregnancy Responsibility Network.
