Several members of the Youth United Way spent Saturday steadily shoveling dirt into the bed of a pickup truck.
To celebrate April as National Volunteer Month, the Youth United Way chose Habitat for Humanity to make a difference by helping an area family build their first home on College Street.
"It feels good helping out," said Katie Porter of Central High School, a Youth United Way volunteer.
The Youth United Way will also spend two afternoons a week during April to help tutor children after school at the Boys and Girls Club in Cape Girardeau.
The Youth United Way, formed in September by the Area Wide United Way, involves area high school students in the United Way to build an understanding of community needs and foster student involvement in community volunteer opportunities. It is composed of students from public high schools in Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City, Notre Dame Regional High School and Saxony Lutheran High School.
