Younghouse Distributing Co. has expanded its warehouse operations.
"We've added another 7,000 square feet to our building," said E. C. Younghouse. "The building is air conditioned and will be used as additional storage for our many products."
The company wholesales a number of items including fishing tackle, fireworks, novelty items, toy and greeting card racks, school supplies souvenirs and a variety of gift items to retailers within a 100-mile area.
"We have three salesmen on the road," said Younghouse.
Younghouse Distributing is located on Old HIghway 61, just off Highway 74.
This is the second expansion for the firm during this decade. In 1984, a 2,800-square-foot structure was added.
"We've been in that location about 15 years," said Younghouse, "but I've been in the wholesale distributing business 41 years.
Younghouse, a native Cape Girardean, purchased the old Perkinson Wholesale Candy Co., which was located in downtown Cape Girardeau, on Broadway, in 1949, and built it into Younghouse Distributing, which now employs eight full-time and six part-time employees.
Perkinson Candy Sales was established by W. L. and Norma Perkinson in the early 1920s, and was located on Water Street a number of years before moving to the 100 block of Broadway.
"We don't sell candy any more," said Younghouse. "Souvenir and gift items are our really big products, and fireworks are good during the selling season in late June to early July."
