YOUNG FIDLER TO BE BAND'S GUEST AT CONCERT

On Thursday, the Jackson Municipal Band will play a collection of hits by Elton John. The trombone section will be featured on Frank Cofield's "Trombero," with the performance concluding with "The Golden Age of Rock and Roll" and "Sorta Spiritual."

Thursday's guest performer will be Lisel Schoenberger who has won the coveted Governor's Cup and was named the best entertainer in the state of Indiana. In addition, this young, local performer has won first place at the Southeast Missouri District Fiddle Contest and was named Junior Fiddle Champion in the state of Indiana.

On "Back Roads," a local public television special, Schoenberger was one of the featured performers, then selected to perform at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. Schoenberger also had performed in Paris on a recent tour of France, where she was received with enthusiastic audience response.

At last week's concert, the band performed a rendition of Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," several selections from the musical "Wizard of Oz" and several marches .

The woodwind section was featured in "Waggery for Woodwinds." The event was concluded with "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Bonaparte's Retreat."

Steve Schaffner, one of the area's premier country fiddlers, was a special guest performer for the band. Schaffner has worked as string instructor at Cape Girardeau School District and has traveled with the Narvel Felt's Band and performed with country stars such as: George Jones, Tammy Wynette and Ronnie Milsap.

During his touring years, Schaffner performed at the renowned Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
