Planning is under way for the second annual YELL for Newspapers fund-raising campaign.
About 50 volunteers representing 34 different civic organizations and business firms met Thursday to lay the groundwork for this year's old newsboys day, said Dorothy Klein of the United Way.
A special YELL edition of the Southeast Missourian newspaper will be distributed Sept. 15 on street corners in Cape Girardeau and Scott City. On Sept. 16, a special YELL edition of the Cashbook Journal will be distributed in Jackson.
YELL newspaper sales in Scott City is an addition this year, said Klein. "Scott City expressed a desire to be involved in the program," she said.
Like last year's edition, the 1992 YELL newspaper will include coupons for free items and a lottery number for a chance to win one of several prizes. Every newspaper will include a comic book donated again by VIP Industries of Cape Girardeau.
The fund-raising activity raises money for the Newspapers in Education program and for special literacy programs through the Area Wide United Way.
"People are really enthusiastic about the project," Klein said. "A number of the organizations have staked their corners."
"It's a one-morning event," Klein said. "People are doing something worthwhile and also having a lot of fun."
She added that more volunteers are needed. For more information, call 334-9634.
