The rift between property owners and contractors that stalled channel improvements to the Cape LaCroix Creek Flood Control Project has been resolved.
The final phase of work on the channel improvements to Cape LaCroix Creek behind the Lowell's/Silo Building north of Bloomfield Road, will resume this week.
Construction was halted several months ago because excavation equipment caused cracks in the walls of the Lowell's/Silo building.
Removal of dirt caused damage to at least one other building near the construction site. A portion of a storage building wall, which once was used by Sunny Hill Pet Center, collapsed a year ago.
Bill Brinkopf, part owner of Sunny Hill, said he has been assured by the contractors that the wall will be restored when construction resumes.
The contractors -- Dumey Excavation Inc. and Brenda Kay Construction Inc. -- told property owners they have worked out a plan to protect the building as they construct the 75-foot-wide and 14-foot-deep channel.
Terms of the plan were worked out last week. The anticipated completion date for the channel work is early 1995.
The flood-control project is being financed with a quarter-cent capital improvements tax approved by the city voters and with matching federal money.
