New copper sheets glisten in the sun as workers continue the renovation of the Academic Hall dome Monday at Southeast Missouri State University. The dome work is part of a major restoration of the building including corridors, stairwells and its exterior. A mezzanine will be built between the building's third floor and the dome at an estimated cost of $1.051 million. It will include restricted access to a special-event meeting place with a glass ceiling so the interior of the dome may be viewed. The university dedicated $22.8 million in bond proceeds for the renovation of Academic Hall in December 2010. The building has stood since 1906. Completion is expected by July.
