SIKESTON -- Timmy Wencewicz hit an opposite-field, 3-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the fourth-seeded Wood & Huston Cape Junior Legion team to a 5-2 victory over No. 5 seed Poplar Bluff in the opening round of the District 14 Tournament Wednesday.
The shot to right field came with two outs and with two strikes and was Wencewicz's second game-winning homer of the summer.
Jay Pierce picked up the win in relief of Scott Eftink.
Eftink went the first six and gave up two runs (one earned) on just three hits. He fanned five and walked six.
Pierce went the seventh and eighth innings and allowed no runs on one hit and three walks while striking out three.
Zac Fidler went 2-for-3 for Cape.
Cape will play Dunklin County at 5:30 p.m. today in a semifinal game.
Chaffee 16, Jackson 4
SIKESTON -- No. 3 seed Chaffee had no trouble disposing of No. 6 Jackson in the opening round of the District 14 Junior Legion tournament. Chaffee won the game in five innings.
John O'Rourke picked up the win in three innings, allowing five hits and a walk while walking one.
Offensively, O'Rourke had three hits, including a triple. Travis Hanback had three hits with a triple and five runs batted in.
Chaffee will play Sikeston at 3 p.m. today.
